With a view to presenting the life and teachings of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi against the backdrop of the past five thousand yeas of Indian society, a large commemorative volume entitled Great women of India was published in 1953-54 during her Birth Centenary Celebrations. This work was edited by Swami Madhavananda (the then General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission) and the well-known historian Dr R C Mazumdar. For the convenience of general readers who do not have time to geo thought such a large volume, we take great pleasure in bring out , on the occasion of Holy Mother’s 50th Birth Anniversary, an abridged edition of the book under the title Eminent Indian Women from the Vedic Age to the Present. This work is an abridgement of the whole volume except for the chapter Evolution of Mother Worship in India, which is published by us as a separate booklet. The position of women in any society is a true index of its cultural and spiritual level; Quite a fascinating picture unfolds itself in the pages of this book. It is a long procession, through the ages, of Indian women who attained greatness in various spheres of life and culture-political and aesthetic, moral and spiritual.
