Description

As a tribute to Javeed Alam and his exemplary life, some of his close friends and admirers have come together in this volume with reflections on the range of themes that he pursued in his work with such intelligence and relish for some four decades: the nature of capitalism and the various angles of a Marxist response to it, the nature of secularism and liberalism and the forms of modernity which they usher in, and Gandhi’s political ideas in the context of Indian society and India’s own unfolding modernity.

Where in the wide swathe between Hyderabad and Himachal would p a man probing for intellectual and political commitment over some ?fty adult years, settle? Javeed Alam chose to settle on the equally wide swathe of Left politics in a life dedicated to both the theoretical and practical Work that has sustained such a politics in India.

As a tribute to him and this exemplary life, some of his close friends and admirers have come together in this volume with re?ections on the range of themes that he pursued with such intelligence and relish over these years: the nature of capitalism and the various angles of a Marxist response to it; the nature of secularism and liberalism, and the forms of modernity which they usher in; and Gandhi’s political ideas in the context of Indian society and India’s own unfolding modernity.

It is a pleasure for each one of us to present these essays to Javeed in gratitude for the great pleasure we have long derived from his company.
