VOLUME 2

The Double Concerto was the first orchestral composition I was commissioned to write. I was approached by Jack Eliot, the conductor of the New American Orchestra, to write a composition, which they would premiere at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, an extremely prestigious auditorium. I had never written a full orchestral composition before, although I had done my Master’s in Western classical music. Maestro Elliot gave me complete freedom and told me that whatever I chose to write, he would conduct and the orchestra would play. It was wonderful. I decided to write a Double Concerto. As the title suggests, there were two soloists, for the composition with the orchestra, myself and Hubert Laws, a brilliant flautist.

At the concert, there were many reputed artistes scheduled to play. During the rehearsal, the conductor decided to shift my composition to the final slot of the evening-a great honour.

VOLUME 4

During the time of the India Festival in the USSR, I was asked to perform an orchestral composition of mine (Fantasy on Vedic Chants) with a Russian orchestra at the Bolshoi Theatre, one of the most prestigious concert halls. Subsequently, based on the incredible success of this performance, I was commissioned to write a new orchestral composition for the Kirov Orchestra, which they would premiere and perform during their tour of India.

I decided to call this new composition Shanti Priya, and it was written for a full orchestra, solo Indian violin and Indian percussion. The inspiration for this composition came largely from my experiences and feelings while in Russia.
On this album, the composition has been performed with the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Micheal Helmrath, a man I consider not only a great conductor but a fantastic human being. I thoroughly enjoyed this collaboration.
