Born in the Punjab in 1942, Raghu Rai is internationally recognized as one of India's mostdistinguished photographers. A member of Magnum, the photo agency for premierphotographers, his work has appeared regularly in Time, Life, GEO, Paris Match, NationalGeographic, The New York Times and Newsweek. In 1980, he joined India Today as PictureEditor.
Besideswinning many national and international award, Rai has exhibited his work in London,Paris, New York, Prague, Hamburg and Tokyo and has twenty-five of his photographs in thepermanent collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. He has published severalbooks including Mother Teresa, Delhi: A Portrait, The Sikhs and Indira Gandhi. His mostrecent book, Taj Mahal, was published by Times Editions.

John Kenneth Galbraith, who writes the introduction for this volume, was born in Ontario,Canada, in1908. One of the world's best known economists, he first went to India in 1956when he traveled the subcontinent to study the operation of India's Second Five Year Plan.He later served as ambassador to India from 1961-63, A prolific writer, Galbraith is theauthor of several major works which include The Affluent Society, The New Industrial Stateand Economics and the Public Purpose. He is also the co-author of a book on Indianpainting, Indian Painting, The Scene, Themes and Legends, published by Houghton Mifflin.
