 Indiaclub.com Description

The present book is the first publication of its kind, which deals with a complete evolution of the sculptural art of Andhra, right from the second century B C to the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire in its true perspective. The Introduction initiates the discussion with the norms and general characteristics of Indian sculptures, including the techniques and interplay of multiple traditions flowing from one end of the country to the other.

The second chapter Socio-Religious Background presents a critical study of the socioeconomic and religious conditions, which have contributed to the growth of the plastic art of Andhra to large extent.

The third chapter Iconography deals in detail with the religious symbolism in Buddhist art and the later iconography at various centres belonging to all the major sects in the Andhra region. The last chapter Sculpture brings out at length the aesthetic and plastic qualities of the sculpture of the region. The book is adequately illustrated, to highlight the most subtle and finest aspects of Andhra sculpture.
