India attained freedom on 15 August. 1947 but this great event was marred by the Partition. The people had to undergo untold miseries due to loot, arson and murder that took place at that time. The focus of this novel is on the process that turned inimical the cordial relations that had existed among the Hindus, the Sikhs and the Muslims since ages.
The people were subjected to traumatic experiences when they had to leave their homes under duress for the places across the border. A sort of love story has been interwoven in the texture of the novel that highlights the sensibilities of the individuals in a Sikh and a Muslim family at that juncture of history. The hiatus between the elder and the younger generation is also evident in the form of clash of values. Ultimately, the basic human goodness prevails on the sourness of relationships that had a momentary phase.
