Gitanjali is deeply treasured by those who speak Bangali. The version herein is a rendering of the text as it appears on the Bengali page, 157 poems each musically, intellectually and spiritually of a piece.Tagore wrote Gitanjali from 1906-10, but mostly in the last three months of that period. He dated all the poems after the first few and published them in chronological order of composition. Readers may like to know that 80,81 and 82 were written on the same day; as were 112, 113, 114. Indeed the last three were followed all on the next day by 115, 116, 117, and 118. Tagore translated a number of the Gitanjali into English in 1912, at first while recovering from illness and without the energy, as he put it, to sit down and write anything new. This is a limited edition, published by Writers Workshop to celebrate the 50th anniversary of India's independence.
