The Lackadaisical Sweeper from which the book takes its name is about the friendship between an Indian woman living in Hongkong and an American, who meet every morning for a constitutional. The sweeper whom they come across each day, and who refuses to return their salutations, forms the backdrop to their conversations and the story. It is a crudely comical tale that ends with an ironic victory for the sweeper.Almost all the stories are about Indian women visiting, working or living in foreign countries. Mostly young, and from fairly typical middle-class backgrounds, the women are audacious, self-assured, unpredictable and never depressing. These are stories to puzzle over, to wonder what it would be like to meet some of the characters. Her bold, no-nonsense style is reminiscent of the longer works of Ismat Chughtai.
