From Author's Introduction:This marriage ceremony was prepared specially for the wedding of my son Ananda on 21 December 1980 in Calcutta. My aim was to present the essential of the Hindu wedding, shorn of the excessive ritualisation that has crept into it as a result of regional variations, commercial consideration, and unwarranted sacerdotal influences. In my attempt to retrieve from the air a pure, live tradition, I was helped by the pioneer efforts of Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterji in this field. It is my hope that this booklet will also serve the idealism and sacred bonding needs of all who feel that such a text restores to the ceremony the auspiciousness and sanctity that mechanical performance has deprived it of in modern times.
