This work is a socio-cultural critique of Indian writing in English.
There exist a few histories of Indian writing in English (IWE) from Derozio o the present day. But their defining nature ad scope have been, more or less, a linear narration of authors' works and their times. Quite often the determinants of literary excellence in India are non-literary. Members of the affluent classes as litterateurs here, owe more to their position in society, than to their talent, for their visibility.
The fact of the matter is that in the prevailing IWE scenario, literary criticism is incomplete as a tool. Worse, it has been manipulated for promoting vested interests. Through a blend of socio-cultural exegesis and textual approach, the book, an en-century evaluation, endeavors to make a holistic statement on the corpus of Indian writing in English for the last two hundred years.
