This volume seeks to present a history of the Indian Ocean as seen from maritime India and built round the commerce of the Indian Ocean. The essays are not the outcome of any particular conference nor do they present the outlines of knowledge in an established area of enquiry. Historians living and teaching in different parts of the world have felt the need for such a book to introduce the Indian Ocean as a thematic entity to students and researchers. ‘India and the Indian Ocean 1500-1800’ is the outcome of this.

Bibliographies appended to the essays will allow readers to explore the field further on their own, and historians working in South-east Asia, East Africa or West Asia will appreciate the convergence of their interests with those of maritime India.

EXCERPTS FROM REVIEW:

The editors have produced a commendable product. The collection succeeds in establishing a framework for analysis of the history of the Indian Ocean over the centuries in question… The introductory analysis and overview provided by the editors are specially valuable.
