It's celebration time once again for the lovers of Urdu poetry. By completing his long-awaited anthology of modern Urdu poetry, the author has concluded a poetic odyssey that began in 1990 with his translations of the old masters. Kanda has been a pioneer in introducing the readers, especially of the non-Urdu-knowing class, to the best specimens of Urdu poetry translated into English.

This book concentrates on Twentieth century poets representing India and Pakistan. It contains 94 poems - ghazals as well as nazms - selected from the works of 33 poets. In the case of the poets who have been featured in his earlier works, Kanda has avoided a repetition of verses in most cases.

This volume follows the pattern of Kanda's earlier books, wherein each poem is presented in Urdu calligraphics, followed on the opposite page by its English translation and a Romanised version of the original text. The translation is simple, lucid and rhythmical, and the author has attempted to reflect not only the sense and spirit, but also the harmony of the original verses.

This book fulfills a long-felt need of the lovers of Urdu poetry.

About the Author

K C Kanda has had long experience as a teacher of English in Punjab and Delhi Universities. He holds a first class first in Urdu and a Doctorate in English from Delhi University. While English poetry has been his forte professionally, Urdu poetry has been his love since his school days. He has produced seven anthologies of selected Urdu poetry rendered into versified English. Dr Kanda was given the Delhi Urdu Akademi Special Award in 1997 for excellence in translation, and he is currently working on a Master-Couplets of Urdu Poetry arranged subject-wise.
