 About the Author

Mallikarjun Mansur was a torrent figure in the world of music. His singing was characteristic of Jaipur - Atrauli style and shows significant similarities to Kesarbai Kerkar. He sang for more than sixty years. There was always a special intensity to his singing, a special urgency and earnestness in his treatment of melody. The most captivating aspect of Mallikarjun Mansoorªs music was its dramatic element.

His singing was marked by attractive alap, breath control permitting long passages and attractive tans taken at a fast face. His voice was naturally sweet and there was no hint of artificiality in any of the registers, including the higher octave, and his tans too were sung in a natural voice. Pandit Mallikarjun Mansurªs singing showed its own identity through its innovativeness and creativity.

His early childhood was influenced by his mother who sang folk songs and his father who was a connoisseur of music. As a young boy he followed in the footsteps of his elder brother, and went on stage to make a name for himself. But he also left the stage early, when he was still in his teens. The musician Nilkantha Buwa heard him and told his brother to make Mallikarjun a musician. Mallikarjun Mansurªs reverence for his teachers was immense, specially for Nilkantha Buwa and for the sons of Alladiya Khan - Manji Khan and Burji Khan. Even when he was nearing forty, he made repeated trips from his hometown Dharwad to Kollahpur for lessons from Burji Khan. And thirty-five years after Burji Khanªs death, he would say that his gurus continued to guide him in spirit, inspiring him, enabling him to understand the meaning of music, and bringing him whatever reputation he had gained.

He was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1971 and a fellowship from the same institution in 1982.Mallikarjun Mansur passed away in 1992.
