Kolkatar Kachhei written in 1957 brought Gajendra Kumar Mitra (1908-1994) the Sahitya Akademi Award. Set in early twentieth century, it is the story of Rashmoni and her twin daughters, Syama and Uma and their diverse yet cruel fate.
In his portrayal of the lives of the protagonists Gajendra Kumar Mitra both explores and critiques ruthlessly the then society of Bengal which treated women with inhuman callousness.

Dr Anasuya Guha is Professor and Head, Department of English Bethune College, Kolkata. She is great grand-daughter of the noted editor and journalist Ramananda Chatterjee. Her translated books include Nijashwa ek Ghar, authorized Bengali translation of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s also translated Jibanananda Das, R.K. Narayan, Sita Devi and Anisujjaman among others.
