Description
In his introduction the author has prefaced this classical work in the following words:"This dictionary was written at the request of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and is printed at their expense. I desire to tender my hearty acknowledgements to that Venerable body for thus producing a work which otherwise might not perhaps have been printed. And, with a view to aid those translators of the Holly Scriptures, who may use this volume, I made one improvement while the work was being printed: under each word calling for illustration (as God, Lord, Heaven, Holy, Salvation, and the like,) I have stated the various expressions used, in particular texts, in the Sanskrit, Bengali, Kanandi,Tamil or Telugu versions. These word are chiefly Sanscrit : and it is curious to observe what a difference exists. The word vanity is rendered by ten different Sanscrit words. "
