Description

This photo album records people, happenings, events and memories which matter. Majority of the pictures featured in this book are credited to ace photographer Prashant Panjar.

One of the important reasons for the extraordinary success of Outlook has been the magazine's visual quality. Often, the static picture of a single child pinned under earthquake rubble speaks far longer than ten minutes of helicopter shots of a destroyed town. Often the moment is more important than the process, the numbers, and the hindsight-heavy analysis.

The words can be tapped out on a keyboard with the help of a thesaurus but the photographer has to capture the moment as it hangs in balance. He has to record the twinkle in the eye before it fades. He has to plagiarize the teardrop before it leaves the eye.

In a country like India, questions, more than any other function they perform, carry different degrees of hope that the one right answer, or even a few right ones, will ever be found. The questions are a nation talking to itself. And the pictures are the questions.

This book contains enough of those questions that can encourage us to make at least a feeble effort to make sense of our confused times.

A photograph is neither taken nor seized by force. It offers itself up. It is the photo that takes you. One must not take photos.
