This work is the first published novel in English by an Indian, and marked Bankimchandra debut as a writer. The novel was serialized in 1864 in Indian Field, a short-lived magazine published from Calcutta, but it did not appear as a book in the author's lifetime, and soon went into oblivion. In the 1930s all but the first three chapters of the text were fortuitously rediscovered. The missing chapters were retranslated into English from a Bengali rendering which Bankimchandra himself had begun, and the reconstructed whole was then published .The present edition reprints the 1935 version and once more makes available to the reader an unusual but neglected novel, a work by one of India's most celebrated writers that has been more heard of than read for over a century.
