This book seeks to examine how we view India's ideological tradition, and how we ought to view it. The main concern is to uncover the historical model on which most historians of Indian thought, consciously or unconsciously, have based their studies.
It has been contented in this book that most accounts of ancient Indian thoughts and of the Hindu mind have been vitiated by historical model not appropriate for the study. The author has tried to show that the kind of plurality which characterized ancient India did not obtain in the west and consequently, studying the Indian institution on the analogy of the west is bound to create a false picture
