Description

This is the first book on Mrinal Sen that links his art with his life and time. It is an intimate record of the development of this extraordinary film maker. Here for the first time, he comes out of his self-imposed 'Lakshmanrekha'.

Mrinal Sen, the stormy petrel of Indian Cinema, has often said that he became a film director by accident. In reality, he neither did nor ever wanted to do anything other than film making. Sen's entire life is a series of such apparent contradictions.

Mrinal Sen came to the limelight in the last Sixties with Bhuvan Shome, a film made out of a shoe-string budget and a simple storyline. This film inspired a whole generation of film makers and heralded, what is now called, the Parallel Cinema Movement in India.

As a film maker, Mrinal Sen grew up with his time and his films show the growth, development and moral dilemma of the middle class. A non-conformist from the beginning, he broke away from the commercial set-up of cinema, freely experimented with new styles and techniques of film making and even dared to cross swords with the legendary Satyajit Ray.
